The Tweed

The tweed is of British origin. It was a hand-woven fabric. It was a rather peculiar fabric, which was indeed rough, thick and felted. Also known for its resistance to wind and moisture, it is an extremely durable fabric. In addition, the colors were mostly dull and unappealing. It was really a work garment reserved only for men.

It was then a subject coveted by the bourgeoisie. Formerly on coats as on jackets, tweed is now available on all pieces such as dresses, caps, an iconic accessory in the male wardrobe, little by little borrowed by women nowadays, or even on bags. Tweed was popularized for women by Coco Chanel with her sublime pencil skirt and tweed suit jacket.

Subsequently taken up by many designers of luxury houses, tweed is now perceived as a very sophisticated material, it is used to breathe new life and new energy into this iconic garment that is the tweed jacket. So nowadays, a well-cut and well-crafted tweed jacket evokes a certain refined elegance. It is the same for the other pieces in tweed which evoke elegance and singularity.

It is a relatively heavy woven woolen fabric resembling a hand spun fabric. To obtain it, we combine several strands of wool with irregular threads of different colors, and twist them with each other. The threads thus obtained are then woven together.

The result is an irregularly textured, warm fabric with a subtle color effect. Indeed, the tweed is dyed in a fairly recognizable range of colors because the traditional colors are vegetable, such as ambrosia or marigold orange, heather or nettle green, lichen or bedstraw red, fern root yellow or purple elderberries and iris blue.

Tweed is available in a variety of designs and types of weaves which contribute to the style as well as the durability of the fabric. The type of weaving used to make The Atropos dress is "barley corn" (barley grain).

These tweeds are generally coarse and feature a weave that mimics the effect of barley grains when viewed up close. This type of tweed adds dimension to the garment and brings it to life.

This material can easily be combined with other softer and simpler materials and thus comes in countless pieces that become essential to our wardrobe. The tweed brings a generally very particular and unique aspect.
